Race Reels® has been designed to reduce identifiable operator exposures associated with conventional ratchet-strap handling. This assessment compares foreseeable hazards in the load-restraint workflow and identifies the product, operational and site controls required to manage remaining risk.

Before Load Restraint Begins — Establish a Safe Work Zone

The operator should confirm that the load-restraint area is suitable before commencing. Site traffic management remains a critical control regardless of the restraint equipment being used.

  • Separate the task from moving vehicles, forklifts and mobile plant where practicable.
  • Confirm adequate working space along the side of the vehicle.
  • Check the receiving side before throwing or placing any lashing.
  • Keep pedestrians and other workers clear of the strap-placement zone.
  • Follow site exclusion zones, traffic plans and supervisor instructions.
  • Do not begin or continue if the work zone cannot be controlled safely.

This comparison considers physical hazards, traffic exposure and human-factor risks in manual webbing-ratchet work. It shows where Race Reels® changes the workflow, reduces technique-dependent steps and controls unused webbing, while identifying the operational and site controls that remain necessary.

Operator movement beyond the vehicle footprint & traffic exposure Potential outcome: struck-by, collision or crush injury; loss of situational awareness. With a full-length 9 m strap, excess webbing can run several metres beyond the side of the vehicle - in some common load setups, up to approximately 6 m depending on load and vehicle geometry. The operator may then walk away from the vehicle to retrieve, straighten and return the strap, repeatedly increasing time spent outside the immediate vehicle work zone. Only the webbing required for the load is released. The balance remains controlled on the Reel, reducing strap overrun, retrieval distance and unnecessary movement away from the vehicle. Establish a controlled load-restraint zone. Follow site traffic-management plans, exclusion zones and pedestrian/mobile-plant separation requirements. Do not continue the task if the operator must enter an uncontrolled traffic path.
Throwing or placing a lashing across the load Potential outcome: struck-by injury, awkward movement or uncontrolled landing area. A full-length loose strap may be thrown across the load, leaving a long free tail to travel, land, unroll and then be recovered from the opposite side. The operator can release only the length required to cross the load while the remaining webbing stays contained. The placement hazard is reduced and more controlled, not eliminated. Confirm the receiving side and trajectory are clear. Never throw toward a person, vehicle or operating plant. Where throwing is unsuitable, use a site-approved alternative placement method such as a lightweight extension pole.
Task load, distraction & loss of task continuity Potential outcome: missed step, incomplete restraint, inconsistent tie-off, or reduced awareness of moving traffic and plant. The operator may alternate between threading, pulling long webbing tails, walking away from the vehicle, retrieving overruns, rolling or tying excess webbing and monitoring surrounding traffic. Repeated movement into and out of the vehicle work area can divide attention and add task stress. More transitions and re-start points create more opportunities for interruption, distraction or a step being missed, particularly in busy loading areas or under time pressure. Race Reels® reduces the number of separate webbing-management steps and keeps unused webbing with the Reel. A shorter, more defined sequence supports task continuity and allows the operator to remain focused on restraint placement, tensioning and the final security check. Use a defined SOP and completion sequence. If the task is interrupted, re-check the restraint from an agreed restart point before continuing. Maintain traffic separation and complete a final pre-departure restraint check.
Ratchet pinch / crush points Potential outcome: finger or hand injury. Hand ratchets contain moving pawls, spindles and handles. Fingers can be exposed during threading, tensioning and release. Side-loading changes the webbing-insertion workflow and reduces threading steps, but the ratchet remains a mechanical tensioning device and pinch points remain. Wear task-appropriate gloves where required. Keep hands clear of moving components. Use the designated handle/contact points and train operators in tensioning and release procedures.
Repetitive handling, force & awkward posture Potential outcome: musculoskeletal strain or fatigue. Threading, pulling excess webbing, rolling straps, retrieving overruns and repeated handling can add movement, force and awkward postures. The Reel manages unused webbing; side-loading simplifies insertion; the longer handle provides greater leverage; Reverse Drive provides a defined jam-recovery method. Maintain stable footing and a suitable working height. Avoid over-reaching or climbing onto loads. Use site-approved access or placement aids where ground-level work cannot be performed safely.
Excess webbing securing during transit Potential outcome: loose or flapping strap, snagging, webbing damage, inconsistent transit security or roadside hazard. After tensioning, excess webbing commonly has to be manually rolled, folded or tied off. The quality and security of that tie-off can vary between operators and depends on the operator remembering and correctly completing an additional step. The Specialised Reel provides a dedicated, repeatable method to retain and secure unused webbing during transit when used in accordance with the operating instructions. The excess strap remains managed as part of the system rather than relying on an operator-dependent roll or tie-off. Before vehicle movement, verify the Reel is in its required transit-secured position, the restraint is correctly tensioned and no loose webbing can extend into the traffic envelope. Re-check restraints during the journey as required by the operator's procedures and load-restraint plan.
Operator experience, technique dependence & learning curve Potential outcome: inconsistent setup, over-winding, poor excess-webbing management or incorrect task completion. Conventional ratchets require operators to learn and consistently perform several technique-sensitive steps, including threading, managing spindle capacity, pulling through excess webbing, avoiding over-winding, recovering overruns and securing the remaining tail. The simplified side-loading and Reel-managed workflow reduces reliance on operator technique for webbing management and removes several manual steps. This can make the process easier to learn and repeat for new or less-experienced operators after appropriate training and supervision. Race Reels® does not remove the need for training or competency. Provide product instruction, practical familiarisation, supervised use where required and competency verification consistent with the fleet's training system.
Process variation & SOP consistency Potential outcome: variable work practices, inconsistent supervision, missed checks or reduced assurance across a fleet. Different operators may use different methods to thread, pull through, store excess webbing, tie off tails, deal with overruns and recover jams. These variations can make procedures harder to standardise, train, supervise and audit. A shorter and more repeatable operating sequence supports a clearer fleet SOP and more consistent training, supervision and auditing. Key steps can be defined around placement, side-loading, tensioning, Reel security, release and final verification. Incorporate Race Reels® into the fleet's approved SOP, induction and competency process. Define the required sequence, visual checks, interruption/restart rule and final sign-off or assurance check appropriate to the operation.
Loose webbing, trip / entanglement & housekeeping during the task Potential outcome: trip, entanglement or loose-equipment hazard. Long loose tails and full-length straps can lie on the ground, pass through work areas or require repeated rolling and handling between restraint tasks. Unused webbing remains managed on the Specialised Reel, reducing the amount of uncontrolled loose webbing present during the workflow. Keep walkways clear. Secure the Reel and restraint in accordance with operating instructions. Do not leave webbing, ratchets or Reels loose where they can create a trip or traffic hazard.
Webbing damage, abrasion or contamination Potential outcome: reduced restraint integrity, load shift or restraint failure. Cuts, abrasion, sharp edges, contamination, heat, dragging loose webbing on the ground or poor storage can compromise any webbing restraint. The Reel manages and contains unused webbing, reducing unnecessary loose-webbing exposure, but it does not remove the need for inspection, correct storage or edge protection. Inspect webbing and hardware before use. Use edge protection where required. Withdraw damaged or contaminated equipment from service and follow the operator's replacement criteria.
Ratchet jam or forceful intervention Potential outcome: hand injury, sudden movement or loss of control. A jammed or over-wound ratchet may lead an operator to pull, strike or force the mechanism during recovery. Reverse Drive and the side-loading design provide a defined recovery and release pathway. Follow Race Reels® operating and release instructions. Keep hands/body clear of tensioned webbing and moving components. Do not use unauthorised cheater bars or improvised tools.
Detachable equipment, storage & housekeeping Potential outcome: loose-equipment hazard, trip hazard, loss or damage. Loose ratchets and straps require designated storage and can become misplaced, damaged or left in work areas. Race Reels® provides a compact managed strap system, but the equipment remains removable from the vehicle. Nominate secure on-vehicle or depot storage when equipment is not in use. Do not leave equipment on the ground or where it can be struck by vehicles. Consider fleet asset identification.
Incorrect restraint selection or configuration Potential outcome: load movement, vehicle instability or loss of load. No webbing restraint system is suitable for every load, anchor arrangement, vehicle or loading method. Race Reels® is a load-restraint tool and must be used within its rated specification and appropriate loading configuration. Use the correct number, capacity, position and configuration of restraints for the load. Follow applicable loading plans, anchor-point ratings, load-restraint guidance and company procedures.

Remaining hazards & human factors

Controls Still Matter

Race Reels® simplifies the workflow and reduces several physical and human-factor exposures. It does not remove the need for a controlled work zone, competent operators, a defined SOP and final load-restraint verification.

Residual hazard 01

Controlled Strap Placement

The throwing or placement hazard is reduced and more controlled - not eliminated. Race Reels® allows only the length required for the task to be released while unused webbing remains contained.

  • Check the receiving side and trajectory before placement.
  • Keep people, vehicles and operating plant out of the placement zone.
  • Follow the site's approved load-restraint procedure.
  • Where throwing is unsuitable, use a site-approved alternative placement method.

Mechanical Pinch Points

Mechanical pinch points remain. A Race Reels® ratchet is still a mechanical tensioning device with moving parts and stored webbing tension.

  • Use defined tensioning and release procedures.
  • Do not use unauthorised extension bars, striking tools or improvised methods.

Distraction, Interruption & Completion

A simpler workflow reduces task complexity; it does not eliminate human error. Busy traffic environments, interruptions and time pressure can still affect attention and task completion.

  • If interrupted, re-check from the fleet's nominated restart point.
  • Train and supervise new or less-experienced operators until competent.
  • Keep traffic and mobile plant separated from the load-restraint task.

A simple, repeatable sequence helps protect task continuity and makes the final restraint state easier to train, supervise and verify.

  2. 2Inspect ratchet, Reel, webbing, hooks and associated hardware and confirm the restraint is suitable for the load and vehicle.
